Team Ontario closed out the 2023 Open Nationals the same way it started, with numerous outstanding performances and an overall 2nd place ranking as a province. On the final day of competition, the seniors took centre stage and fought for the title of Canadian Champion. In total, Ontario saw 45 athletes competing, winning 9 medals from 8 different clubs. It is great the see the number of clubs supporting elite judokas in the province. A special highlight of the day was a father-son match in the M +100kg division. Jeff Allen and his son Lucas faced off in what is a very unique match at a National Championships.
Looking back over the 4 days of competition, Ontario placed 2nd in the provincial rankings every day. Ontario clubs also captured the top spot in the club rankings on 3/4 days, with Sheffield Judo Club ranking 1st in the Ne-waza competition and Taifu Judo Club taking the top spot on Day 2 & Day 3. Taifu was also awarded as the top High Performance Club for 2022 at the awards banquet on Sunday evening.
We would like to congratulate all the athletes for their hard work at the competition and the months and years leading up to these events. And a huge thanks to all the coaches for their ongoing work and to the family and friends that travelled to Montreal or supported the athletes from home. It was great to see such a passionate support team cheering on all of Ontario. Finally, a big thank you to the Team Ontario coaches, Sensei An and Sensei Carline for continued support of high performance athletes in Ontario.
