Remembering Goki Uemura (1943–2025)

Judo Ontario is deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Goki Uemura, a beloved sensei and a true pillar of the Canadian judo community.


Born in 1943, Goki Uemura was a distinguished judoka who dedicated his life to the sport. As a competitor, he represented Canada in the 1973 World Judo Championships in the -70 kg category and won a gold medal at the 1972 Canadian Championships in Halifax.


In 1982, Sensei Uemura co-founded the Shin Bu Kan Judo Club, now known as the Mississauga Judo Club. Under his guidance, the club became renowned for producing world-class athletes and fostering a strong sense of community. A hachidan (8th dan) judoka and Judo Hall of Fame inductee, his legacy continues to inspire generations of judokas across the country.

The Uemura family invites everyone to join in honoring the life and legacy of Goki Uemura:

Date: Tuesday, January 21, 2025

Time: Service from 6:30–7:30 PM, followed by fellowship, refreshments, and special tributes
